AR Manual Experience

For this project, I reimagined a new way for gymnastics judges to learn and retain the complex shorthand symbols used in scoring. Since judges must identify and apply these symbols within seconds during routines, this interactive AR experience, using the software Hoverlay, was designed to support faster recognition, improve retention, and make the learning process more engaging.

Manual Redesign

Since the existing shorthand manual lacked engagement and usability, I redrew the symbols on my iPad then redesigned the layout and aesthetics in InDesign to create a more visually appealing and user-friendly version.

Asset Collection

To bring a visual component to the experience, I used the app 3D Women Gym to capture video and photo assets of a model gymnast performing each skill. Then I added each photo and video into After Effects to add the symbol, name and short description into the top right corner of the frame. Incorporating these visuals helps increase recognition speed and enhances the overall effectiveness of the manual.

Functionality Testing

Once all assets were finalized, I brought the concept to life in Hoverlay by integrating the visuals and building interactive sequences. During this stage, I conducted user testing to observe how people navigated the experience and identified areas where additional guidance or tutorials were needed.

AR Experience Highlights

Above is a highlight reel showcasing key features of the book. Every page shown is fully functional, I just clicked through to demonstrate the interactive elements. The book includes visuals, symbol-combination exercises, and a variety of practice quizzes. Overall, I’m proud of the final outcome, it’s both visually engaging and functional, designed to make learning easier and more enjoyable.
